Working as a nurse, it has been 26 years for this lady. When she was young, two of her grandparents suffered from Parkinson's disease. Her grandparents lived with her and her family, so she grew up helping them.

You can see her at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights since this is where she works. Being a floating nurse, she needs to move to many different departments depending on where they need her. Despite the US economy claiming they are slowing down, life at hospitals seems to still be busy. She shares that it seems like today, more patients want better service from hospitals. Many hospitals operate at lightning speed as the public demands are increasing and the patients are getting sicker.

Currently there has been a rise in the patient population in the hospitals as there are more old people. She also shares that the hospital does not have so much nursing students in training. With what is happening is the economy today, more health care workers will be needed in the country. If people understood what nurses really do, people would look at the career with a very different point of view. People still perceive nurses the same way despite the job being more comprehensive.


The director at a nursing school in Moline claims that despite the many students taking up nursing still they will be unable to meet the growing demand for the profession. Since there have been a growing number of patients without insurance, many nurses are then needed in the emergency room.

In the health care industry nursing is regarded as one of the largest profession with 2.5 million registered nurses nationwide. These days, nurses are said to just be a handmaid to the doctor and are not that important.

Despite women normally working as a nurse, there are a few men who are entering the profession. The US department of Health and Human Services said that in 2000 there were only about 5.9 percent of male registered nurses.

According to her there is a greater patient load, mandatory overtime and job hazards such as needle stick injuries, violent patients and back injury from moving patients. With many demands, most nurses do not like working in the emergency rooms. It has been a common practice for hospitals to cut deals with nurses.


In hind sight, more people might want to enter a service oriented career. Most of the time nursing gives people a substantial income and good benefits. The reward that nurses get is the joy and gratitude that their patients show them.
